  • 1/2 cup of neutral oil (e.g., canola)
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/41/3 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/31/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons crushed ginger
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Press and pat dry the tofu, then cut into small nuggets.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, salt, and water until slightly runny.
  3. Coat tofu pieces in the batter.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and fry tofu until golden brown.
  5. Mix sauce ingredients in a bowl, then simmer in the skillet for about 5 minutes.
  6. Combine the fried tofu with the sauce until well-coated.
  7. Serve hot over rice or noodles.
