  1. Peel the Cipollini onions and trim the tops to create a blooming effect while keeping the base intact. Rinse under cold water.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk with garlic powder, onion powder, dried dill, and salt; whisk until blended and refrigerate.
  3. In another bowl, mix flour with the spice mix thoroughly.
  4. Dip each onion in buttermilk then coat in the flour mixture; shake off excess flour.
  5. Heat oil in a heavy-duty pot or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Test with a small amount of flour; it should sizzle.
